Sermon on the Mount: Part 2 - God’ Word Fulfilled (October 4, 2026)
TODAY:
Sermon on the Mount: Part 2 - God’s Word Fulfilled
BIG IDEA:
In Jesus, we see all of God’s Word in human form
SCRIPTURES:
Matthew 5:17-20, John 1:1-3, 14, John 5:39
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
Q: What is something that you hold onto and don’t want to change? (like the example of Pride & Prejudice that Rich used)
Q: How do the Scriptures/concepts from this week help you grow as a disciple who loves God, loves people & serves the world (lives on incarnational mission) in everyday life?
Q: Based on these Scriptures, how can you move from unbelief to belief, from just knowing to actually doing in your life?
Be With Jesus / Love God (UP)...
Q: Read Matthew 5:1-20. How have you viewed scripture (both OT & NT)? Do you think of it as directly from God, as good advice, as history to be studied? How do you see Jesus thinking of scripture?
Q: How do you deal with the difficult parts of scripture and still honor it as the perfect expression of who God is and what He wants us to know?
Become Like Jesus / Love People (IN)...
Q: We’re called to be more righteous than the Pharisees. Does that overwhelm you or confuse you? Are you able to see how Jesus is asking us to get real about ourselves? How does self-examination lead us to grace and not defeat?
Q: How can we keep our eyes on the Word (Jesus) even when the Word (Bible) leaves us scratching our head sometimes? What does it look like to process our doubts, questions and confusion together?
Do What Jesus Did / Serve the World (OUT)...
Q: Last week’s message ended with the challenge to be salt & light. How do we exalt Jesus as the Word made flesh, and let the people around us see Him clearly?
Q: What does it look like to focus on the spirit of the law not the letter, our internal life not our external actions, and concentrate on character instead of obeying commands? How does that spill over into how we treat people around us?
NOTES & QUOTES
“When we unmask the human facade of self-delusion, we realize just how utterly
unlike Christ we are in the deepest recesses of our hearts. We are forced to confront
our true natures - how warped and wounded we really are. In that tender place, we all
realize, I can’t self-save. “Physician, heal thyself” is a strategy doomed to fail. We need
help, power, from beyond us. We need grace. (John Mark Comer, Practicing the Way)
ACTION STEPS
1) Read the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) all the way through 3x this week.
2) Jot down 3 things that stand out to you, and consider how these might reveal something inward in you (i.e. challenge character), instead of just outward behavior.
